About Us

Established in 1970 by Kerry Millar, Millars Machinery was built from the ground up having started on a farm in Killinchey near Leeston. Kerry had a keen eye for farm machinery and tractors and his dealer’s instinct soon took him to premises in Leeston where he secured the John Deere tractor franchise for the South Island.

In 1979 Millars Tractor Spares was born after Kerry purchased Giltrap tractor spares in Doyleston from Ian Giltrap. He continued running the two companies in separate locations, as well as opening machinery outlets in Oamaru and Christchurch and gaining the ISEKI franchise.

Ian Giltrap had meantime built a very modern workshop in Leeston where he was selling and servicing trucks and industrial equipment. Pressure from Doyleston residents and the Ellesmere County Council was increasing over the yard at Doyleston so Kerry shut down the operation and bought Giltraps new yard in Leeston in 1982. Millars Tractor Spares continues on this site today.
Both businesses were doing well and complimented each other. Millars Machinery had an outlet for the trade in tractors and Millars Tractor Spares supplied parts to get trade in tractors up and running again for resale.

1987 saw the start of the recession and as farmers could not get finance for new tractors they were putting more hours onto older machinery and buying more used parts to keep costs down. Millars Tractor Spares was already New Zealand’s largest tractor and machinery dismantler by this time and continued to grow in the years that followed.

Kerry’s passion for farming never left him. Farm prices were at a low and he decided to purchase a block near Leeston making way for the next generation to take over the company. Gavin and Paul Millar purchased the company and have grown it progressively over the years maintaining their position as New Zealand’s largest tractor dismantler. Over the last ten years they have concentrated their efforts on buying the latest model tractors for dismantling from all over New Zealand.

With over 25 years in the industry their knowledge of tractors from 1960 onwards is unmatched by any other dismantler in New Zealand. Millars machinery have wrecked more makes and more models that anyone else and know which parts are interchangeable between models and nowadays makes of tractors. Their dedicated team strives for quality of parts and service and will do all they can to dispatch parts overnight where possible.
